Gold Coast Kids Guitar Club offers group lessons for children in the 5-9 year old age bracket. Kids can make new friends and may make use of our guitars.
At the start of every school year, I have parents ringing me and asking if I could teach their child to play the guitar. I would inquire as to how old the child is and like most guitar teachers, if they were any younger than 8 or 9, I would explain that because of the challenges faced caused by a young person's poor fine motor skills and their inability to understand the complex nature of musical symbols, they should call me back in a few years.
Since then I have developed and published a guitar teaching method that allows young people to play guitar based on visually logical finger patterns and imitation of their teacher. Not only have I had a great deal of success with it, it is being used by classroom teachers at All Saints and Somerset Colleges and Granville State. Several local guitar teachers are using it too.
The Copy, Play & Learn method is an easy and fun way for young people to start to play the guitar.
Based on songs appealing to young people, this method develops musicianship, note reading, fine motor skills, and encourages children to recognise and play rhythmic and melodic patterns as they piece together an evolving story based on a boy, his friends and family.
Allowing the child to play guitar as they develop the ability to process and interpret pitch and rhythm, this method makes use of the natural way in which a young person learns. By observing and imitating a logical pattern of notes as demonstrated by the teacher, a young person can confidently play fun and relevant pieces to a vibrant backing track.
I anticipate the club starting early in the new school term on a Saturday morning in the Mudgeeraba area, just off the M1 so it is quite accessible to most on the gold Coast residents. The classes will last an hour with a short break in the middle which will allow the children to freshen up, have a drink and form friendships with the other participants.
